WHAT AFFECTS ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF A HOT TUB?

HEATING AND MAINTAINING WATER TEMPERATURE

Heat from the hot tub transfers to the cool air in the environment. The warmer the water temperature or the cooler the air temperature, the more energy is consumed. Beachcomber is focused on maximising insulation to retain heat, and prevent loss of heat – making Beachcomber Hot Tubs one of the most energy-efficient hot tubs for all seasons.

FREQUENCY OF HOT TUB USAGE

Using a hot tub frequently notably increases energy consumption because of the increased heat loss through the surface of the water when the cover is off. To optimise energy consumption even during usage, Beachcomber uses the most energy efficient pumps and heating technology.

FREQUENCY AND DURATION OF FILTER CYCLES

This consumes 20-25% of total hot tub energy consumption. Minimising filter cycle frequency and duration will reduce overall energy consumption. The Energy Saver Management System allows you the flexibility to adjust your heating modes to reduce power usage and optimise filter cycles, while the 24/7 Hush Pump System™ is dedicated to self-cleaning and filtration, keeping your hot tub water warm, clean, and clear with extremely low energy consumption.

How to ensure hot tub cover longevity – and what to do if you need to replace yours

Hot tub covers may need replacing at least once during the lifetime of your spa.  The best hot tub covers out there typically have a 3 year warranty which compares to longer warranties on some of the other components.  Typically the high quality hot tubs we sell such as British Hot Tubs and Beachcomber Hot Tubs will have a 5 year warranty on the cabinet and a 10 year warranty on the interior shell.

Your cover will last longer if you look after it.  Here are some ways to make your cover last longer.

  1. Use Bromine instead of chlorine.  The fumes are less corrosive on the cover
  2. Keep your water balanced properly; too low or too high PH isn’t good for any of the hot tub components, cover included
  3. Open your cover every day for 5-10 minutes to release build up of chemical vapour under the cover
  4. Have your hot tub regularly serviced.  During the annual service we provide the cover gets a deep clean and we spray with UV protectant.
  5. Make sure you lock your cover clips when not in use, especially when high winds are expected, to make sure the cover doesn’t blow off! This can rip the straps or the fold stitching.

Why do covers need replacing?

We’ve seen all sorts of reasons!  We’ve had customers where builders have dropped bricks or tiles on them from a top story of a house, we’ve had squirrels chewing covers, we’ve had covers not strapped down and blown off and torn in a gale.  However over time with even the best looked after cover the vinyl may fade and go brittle with prolonged exposure to the elements, or the fumes from the chemicals get behind the stitching and over time corrode the mid PVC layer that protects the inner core. Once that happens the inner core becomes water logged and the cover becomes too heavy to lift.

How do I replace my cover?

If its a hot tub we have supplied you with we can often obtain one directly from the manufacturer.  Usually there is a lead time as it may need shipping rather than coming straight from the warehouse.   We can also provide custom made covers in any size and colour to suit any hot tub.  These covers are made in the UK and have 8 week lead time typically.  We offer a bespoke service for hot tub covers.  We come out and measure your existing cover to make sure its going to be an exact fit. This isn’t as easy as it sounds since you have to make sure the curved corners are the right curvature, the skirt is the right length and the straps are in the right place and the right length. Not to mention the fold being in the right place!  Once your cover is ready we deliver and fit it personally, include any adjustments to cover lifters needed, and replacement cover clips.  Then we take your old cover away and dispose of it for you.

Beware of cheap online hot tub covers – the only way to make sure of an exact fit is a bespoke measurement service, and its not easy to dispose of those old covers!  We can replace the cover lifter as well if needed.

Moving Your Hot Tub

Moving house and want to take your hot tub with you? Or want to move your hot tub within your garden? Buying or selling a hot tub?

Its not easy moving a hot tub – they are bulky and very heavy, and attempting to do it yourself could lead to risk of injury or damage to the hot tub.  Why not ask the professionals to do it for you?  With the right experience, trained technicians and correct equipment your hot tub can be moved safely without damage.

How do we move the hot tub?

Firstly,  we disconnect the tub and make the old electrics safe.  We dismantle the cover lifter and wrap the cover.  We provide protective wrap for the hot tub.  Then we we lift on to its side using a Spa Jack and a Spa Wedge airbag.  We slide it out of your garden using either a Spa Sled or a wheeled Spa Kart depending on the access requirements.

The spa is loaded on to the Spa Dolly trailer and towed to the new address. At the new address we unload, position and connect for you.  If you’ve bought a second hand tub we can fill it and commission it for you as well, even providing you with training on how to use and maintain and manage the water quality and chemicals.

Access Requirements

We won’t take the job on unless we’re sure we can get the tub out of the old address and into the new address.  To check this out we will start with photos and/or video and guide you through the measurements we need.  If in doubt we will call round in person to survey in advance of the job.

If you need a crane we can arrange this for you.  We work with a variety of West Midlands & Worcestershire crane companies and we’re sure to find one to suit your job.  We liaise with the company for you and you pay the crane company directly on the day.  Crane lifts start at around £400 so it needn’t be as costly as you might think.

How much does it cost?

Each quote is customised depending on access, distance and whether you have a full service move (including emptying, disconnecting, emptying, refilling and commissioning) or whether you just want us to physically move the hot tub….or something in between!

What area do you cover?

We are based in Hall Green in Birmingham and we generally cover the West Midlands and Worcestershire, incl. Birmingham, Solihull, Redditch, Bromsgrove,  Worcester, Droitwich, Malvern, Alcester, Wolverhampton, West Bromwich, Sandwell, Dudley, Stourbridge, Kidderminster and surrounding areas.  We can move hot tubs into the area from outside of the area or the other way round.  We generally wouldn’t quote for hot tub moves where the start and end of the move are both outside the area.

Winterising Your Hot Tub

Winterising your hot tub

For us, there is no better feeling than soaking in the hot tub in the crisp winter air – it’s so refreshing and relaxing at the same time! However, using your hot tub in winter is not for everyone, so we’re here to talk about winterising your hot tub!

Beachcomber Hot Tub Covered in Snow

Why winterise your hot tub?

While hard-shell hot tubs can be used all year-round, some families prefer to keep their hot tub as a summer-only activity. It’s not hard to see why some people choose this – you’re out in the garden more often, the kids are off school, the nights are longer… sounds great right?

If you’re not going to use your hot tub during the colder months, proper winterisation is vital. If you leave the water in over winter (this includes in the pipework), you’re leaving yourself open to a hefty repair bill in the spring. If you don’t get all the water out, you’ll risk damaging the internal plumbing. The frozen water in the pipework could cracks in the plumbing!

Our British Hot Tubs are designed to withstand the variable UK climate and cold winters while keeping running costs as low as possible. And our Beachcomber Hot Tubs are handcrafted in Canada and loved across the world so they can endure the harshest winters. They can all be left running all day, every day – even through winter!

If you do plan on leaving the hot tub empty for an extended period, it is probably best to get it winterised.

Most damage occurs to hot tubs from improper winterisation. While you can have a go at winterising your hot tub yourself, we recommend getting a professional to do it, to avoid an expensive repair. Our trained engineers offer this service at just £249 – click here to book your professional winterisation.

For further guidance on winterising your hot tub, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our expert Customer Care Team here at Award Leisure Birmingham on 0121 389 2758!

How a Hot Tub Can Improve Your Mental Health

It’s mental health awareness week – an annual event which increases awareness about mental illness and gives us the opportunity to focus on achieving good mental health. Throughout this blog, we discuss some of the ways spending time in a hot tub can improve your overall mental wellbeing.

Increased “happy hormones”

The hydrotherapy massage and warm water in a hot tub creates a pleasurable experience, which releases “happy hormones”.

Our hot tubs are designed with different massage types in each seat, using traditional techniques for healing and relaxation. We know that precisely locating the correct size jet and massaging action where it is most effective is key to relax the body and mind. According to 2004 research, both serotonin and dopamine levels increase after massage. Serotonin is associated with feelings of happiness, focus, and calm, whilst dopamine is associated with feelings of rewards, motivation, and being productive.

Being submerged in warm water is also therapeutic as it triggers the release of endorphins into your blood. “Your skin releases endorphins in response to the soothing warm water the same way that endorphins are released when you feel the sun on your skin,” says Dr. Bobby Buka, a dermatologist based in New York. Endorphins are your body’s natural pain reliever and increase feelings of relaxation.

Get a good night’s sleep

Soaking in a hot tub around 90 minutes before bed could help you get a good night’s sleep. Around bedtime, our body temperature starts to drop, hitting its lowest level as we sleep, then rising again as we prepare to wake up. Although it seems contradictory, soaking in warm water causes blood circulation from the internal core to the peripheral sites of the hands and feet. This can help remove body heat and get the body temperature to go down which signals the pineal gland to start producing melatonin – a hormone that helps control your sleep patterns.

Create long-lasting memories

Nowadays, we spend more time on our phones and less time talking to each other. Hot tubs bring family and friends together and give us the opportunity to talk to each other about how we’re doing. By having a space to escape to with no distractions, we can re-connect with loved ones and create long-lasting memories.

Spend more time outdoors

Hot tubs motivate you to leave the sofa and go outside. Fresh air, sun, trees. Nature is a magical thing and can have strong wellness benefits – such as reducing stress, enhancing mood, and improving focus. Soaking in a hot tub is a form of escapism, it’s somewhere you can nestle away from the stresses of everyday life. The warm water and massage jets relax your body while the fresh air clears your head.

Think Swim Spas are just for swimming? Think again! The size and features on a Swim Spa make them so versatile, that they’re not just for the fitness fanatics!

Have a flick through any Swim Spa brochure and you’ll be greeted with lots of pictures of athletes and swimmers using the Swim Spa as part of their training regime – and they’re not wrong! Swim Spas offer a perfect alternative to installing a full-sized pool into your back garden. If you don’t have Olympic swimming aspirations and you’re wondering if a Swim Spa is worth the investment, read on to see why Swim Spas are for more than just swimming!

Socialising

If you have a large family or lots of friends, there is no better excuse to get everyone together than a soak in the swim spa!

XL Hot Tub

What’s better than a standard hot tub? A bigger one of course! Swim Spas can come with all the lighting, jets, and temperature control that a hot tub can, bringing with it all the health and relaxation benefits you can get from a hot tub. Some Swim Spas also feature lounger seating, so you can use your Swim Spa for relaxation just like a Hot Tub.

Resistance Training

If swimming isn’t quite your thing, but you still want to use your Swim Spa for fitness, resistance training works excellently. By using the resistance of the water (turning the jets on will increase the resistance), you can tailor your workout to suit you! Below are just a few examples of exercises that work well in a Swim Spa:

Jogging on the Spot: A brilliant exercise for warming up, while working your leg muscles.

Bicycle Kick: Put your back against the wall and hold the top lip of the swim spa. Bring your legs up just under the surface of the water and move them in a circular motion, as if you were pedalling a bike. Keep pedalling for 1-2 minutes for a great lower ab and leg workout.

Chest Flys: Starting in a lunge position (to ensure your arms are just under the surface of the water), place your arms straight out in front of you with your palms touching. Bring your arms out to the side, keeping them straight. Return to the starting position and repeat 10-15 times for a killer chest and arm exercise.

If you prefer to use exercise equipment in your workout, there is a wide range of products available. From exercise bikes and treadmills to poles and trampolines, Award Leisure stock products that will take your workout to the next level.

Don’t be fooled by their name – Swim Spas are so versatile and can be used for much more than swimming. If you want to see how a Swim Spa can improve your family’s lives, get in touch with us to receive a Free buyers guide, and to book your site survey!

Are Chlorine Tablets Safe for My Hot Tub?

Chlorine tablets, regardless of brand, all contain a chemical called Trichloroisocyanuric acid (or Trichlor for short). When used in an acrylic Hot Tub, it can cause severe damage to the shell – if the thermal cover isn’t removed for a few days to vent the gases given off by the tablet, severe bleaching of the plastic occurs.

We advise that if you wish to use a tablet form of Hot Tub sanitation, Bromine is the recommended option; either as a Frog Cartridge or a Bromine Tablet. However, we do stock Chlorine tablets for customers that own LayZ Spas, swimming pools, or other non-acrylic spas. If you still wish to use Chlorine to sanitise your spa, we do stock Spamate Chlorine granules which do not contain Trichlor and are safe to use in acrylic spas.

Where Can I Buy a Hot Tub in 2019?

In the age of Social Media trendsetters and YouTube tutorials for just about anything, the internet is a vast wealth of collective knowledge and experiences, and absolutely should not be underestimated for its usefulness in finding something new and learning about it – so should you use it to buy a Hot Tub?

The short answer is – yes! Nothing screams ‘convenience’ more than searching for a luxury Hot Tub from the comfort of your sofa, without having to travel to your local Hot Tub Showroom and hope they have something suitable for you. So where should you go on the internet to find a Hot Tub?

Finding the right online Hot Tub company

It is SUPER important that you choose a reputable company if you are going to buy a Hot Tub from the internet. There are many companies operating solely online that are less than scrupulous, luring customers in with what looks like a ‘good’ deal and a warranty that seems too good to be true – and that’s because in most cases, it is. Most of these companies can offer these incredible deals because they buy cheap spas that break down soon after purchase and have no intention of staying in business long enough to honour any warranty. Sound like a nightmare? Fear not! There are good guys out there selling Hot Tubs on the internet, we promise!

The best way to go about choosing a Hot Tub company to buy from is to not get sucked in by pretty pictures of Hot Tubs – study the company first. Look at how long they have been in business, which should give you a pretty good indication of how capable they will be to honour any warranty they offer. Another great feature to look out for is whether the company install and service their Hot Tubs themselves, or contract it out to a third party; if they have their own dedicated service team, it is likely that the company know their Hot Tubs well, and will be able to help you with any issue that you may encounter!

Finding a good Hot Tub Showroom

It’s no secret that Hot Tubs are expensive. They are a luxury product for a reason, and for most households, they are a pretty major investment which requires a lot of research. The internet is great for ordering an emergency 5 kilo bag of gummy bears (trust me, they’re out there), but most people would be more hesitant to order thousands of pounds worth of a Hot Tub without first seeing the model in a showroom and learning as much as they could from an experienced salesperson. If this sounds like you, then a good old-fashioned showroom is the way to go!

Hot Tub Showroom West Midlands

Do Hot Tubs Help with Weight Loss?

We are all aware of the most common practices for losing weight; exercising, diet plans, weight loss groups, joining the gym. Whatever your weight loss plans and goals it requires additional lifestyle changes to make an impact. One surprising and relaxing approach to aiding weight loss goals could be a simple soak in a luxury hot tub.

Soaking in a hydrotherapy hot tub provides many benefits such as muscular relaxation, supports athletic performance, increases comfort for vascular diseases such as Arteritis. When paired with a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise and dip in the hot tub can improve your chances of weight loss, the benefits not only help to control your weight but to encourage your overall health and well-being.

How do hot tubs help with weight loss?

  • Alerts the mind and body into a relaxing and healthy state, encouraging a positive state of mind which is important to losing weight
  • Relaxing your body and mind can reduce stress and risks for insomnia and restlessness. It also helps with sleep deprivation.
  • Helps your muscles to recover after and between workouts, improves sores or muscle pain caused by injury.
  • Eases muscle and joint discomfort and soreness especially after exercising. This also helps to improve flexibility.
  • May improve health conditions, including diabetes, arthritis and multiple sclerosis, which may hinder your weight loss plans

Studies show that immersion in hot water for 20 to 30 minutes can help reduce levels of glucose and sugar in the blood. This is equally helpful to diabetic patients and to those who would like to lose weight. As you may have already known, too much blood sugar circulating your body ends up stockpiling as belly fat. Thus, by soaking in a hot tub, you are keeping your body from gaining weight as you go through the process of dieting. A 150-pound person would burn about 17 calories sitting in a hot tub for 15 minutes. Bathing in your hot tub for at least 15-20 minutes at 37-40 degrees helps to achieve a deep relaxing sleep increasing your chances for that all-important weight loss! A bath tub will not give you the same benefit as a Hot Tub.

Calories burned in any activity, though, are also a factor of gender, age and health issues.

Additionally, soaking at night promotes deep and restful sleep, which prevents you and your body into going haywire the next day. Lack of sleep can cause you to compensate it with a boost of energy such as; coffee, energy drinks full of sugar, chocolate all which deter away from you goal in losing weight.

Simple And Effective Exercises

Simple and effective exercises performed inside the hot tub can also provide many health benefits. The buoyancy you get from a hot tub is great in performing some exercises you often find hard to do on the ground. Bicycle kicks and leg raises are very good examples of this. Water also offers some light resistance, which can help in toning your muscles. In fact, you can do your warm up in a hot tub before taking on a more strenuous workout. You may not be able to perform some hardcore water exercises but every bit of benefits you can get, even with just these simple exercises, can add up to faster results.

Alternatives to the Hot Tub

A sauna is often touted as burning up to 300 calories in 15 to 20 minutes. While you may lose a pound or two through sweating, you’ll gain it back as soon as you rehydrate your body. A sauna burns about the same number of calories as a hot tub.

While soaking in a hot tub doesn’t burn many calories—it’s estimated that sitting in hot water burns about 3% more calories than sitting on your sofa. As well as many other impressive hot tub health benefits for inspiring weight loss.

Soaking in a hot tub or hydrotherapy provides many health and fitness benefits on its own and supports other healthy habits. Therefore, hot tub hydrotherapy may help not only to improve your weight loss goals but your quality of life.

What is a Plug and Play Hot Tub?

Plug And Play Series

Having a Hot Tub has often been seen as the ultimate luxury, many consider un-affordable. On top of that many think that when installing one in their home, it will require extensive ground work, planning and plumbing. However with the Hot Tub industry revolutionising this really isn’t the case. The arrival of the ‘Plug and Play’ Hot Tub models has certainly helped contribute to the surge in Hot Tub purchasing.

First of all what is a Plug and Play series Hot Tub?

A plug and play Hot Tub is one that runs off a standard 13amp supply, just like the connection you would use for a kettle, or many other appliances around the house. In many cases the cable and plug would still need to be provided by the consumer, however this may eliminate any expense in having to hire an electrician like you would when purchasing a Hot Tub with more jets and bigger pumps, which would require a 32amp supply put in by a qualified electrician.

These spas will also usually take up much less space than a standard Hot Tub, so are perfect for those restricted to space or access, and certainly those who do not want the hassle of upgrading or changing any electrics.

The smaller foot print also eliminates the hassle associated with the installation of a hot tub. For instance with some of the British Hot Tubs Plug and Play Series models, the profile height has been designed so that when it is on its side for delivery, it can fit through a standard gate. This is great for those who may have restricted access, and often eliminates the need for a crane which is of course an extra cost. Many of these Plug and Play models are not too deep, which means they may be considered more aesthetically pleasing than some of the deeper spas so can blend into the garden a lot better than some of the bigger ones – but of course that all depends on your taste! These spas just need to be placed on a solid level base, and don’t require plumbing of any kind as its simple to fill and drain using your hose pipe!

There may be people reading this thinking that because they are living in rented accommodation they can’t have one at all because they may end up moving in a couple years, and it would have to be left at the property and considered to be a wasted investment, but with these spas that is not the case as it is simple to remove and relocate into a new property. And if you choose a quality hot tub with good aftercare service, you can have it for many years and relocate with no issues!

All of these factors have really heightened the surge for Hot Tubbing, with it being more achievable and hassle free than what they were years ago! Whether you are looking for a luxurious massage, hydrotherapy benefits, or just a social hub for friends and family a Hot Tub sure brings couples, friends and families together; designed to suit all needs and budgets, with finance also being available in all reputable stores and dealerships.

The dream of being submerged in hot bubbly water, having a hydrotherapy massage at your fingertips, allowing you to escape from the stresses of daily life whilst being in the comfort of your own home and without time constraints is very much a reality for all!!
